Big Windup (episodes 1 – 7)

I finally got that dust off my Big Windup DVDs and popped it into my computer…only to end up watching it off YouTube. I know, I suck, haha. It just looked better on there. Don’t know if there’s a setting I have to mess around with but it is currently 5AM and I haven’t slept so I just took the easy way

But yes, Big Windup. Since this is a baseball anime, I can’t help but compare it to Daiya

Big Windup follows Mihashi who has just left his old team to play baseball at Nishiura High School. Why? Not only was he being subjected to bullying but he also wanted to allow his teammates to finally have fun playing baseball. Unfortunately, this left him with an extremely timid and self-depreciating personality. In fact, on the first day that he checks out the baseball team at Nishiura, he comes out and tells everyone that he’s a terrible pitcher (and he breaks down #protectMihashi)

However, as we come to learn, Mihashi isn’t a bad pitcher. It’s just that his teammates didn’t work well with him. Now that he’s on a new team with new people surrounding him who plan to go to Koshien, Mihashi has a chance to finally be the Ace he’s always wanted to be

I decided to only watch a couple episodes for this first impression and ended up watching the opening and a whole game! Not so much because I couldn’t stop myself from pressing next, but because I couldn’t find a good place for a pause

In the first seven episodes we pretty much get an idea of who our characters are. Mihashi is an extremely timid pitcher who loves to pitch and is afraid of what others think of him. If something goes wrong in a game, he immediately attributes it to his lack of abilities. We also meet Abe, Nishiura’s catcher, who has only one goal in mind. To win and to (pretty much) control the pitcher. He doesn’t like it when they shake off his signals, wanting to be in control of the game as he believes that’s the only way to win (but that soon changes because female coach is a secret fujoshi Iknowsheis)

We also end up meeting a few other characters on the team but aside from our mains, there are only two others that stood out to me. One of them was our clean up batter named Tajima. Not only is he leagues beyond his teammates but he’s got a great personality, making others admire him instantly. And we also have Hanai, who immediately sees Tajima as his rival. In a sense, I’m really glad the cast here is so small because me and names and characters that generally look alike do not mix well

So far I am enjoying it. It is much slower and the plays are less stressful than what I’m used to. It doesn’t have that static that Daiya does but it has its own appeal as we focus on the characters and their interactions. I am really enjoying our battery here and I can’t wait to see Mihashi gain confidence. I mean, it’s only been the first game but I think he’s well on his way to becoming a great Ace!

And speaking of the Ace, I am so impressed with his control and stamina!

Big Windup! is such a trap, once you’re done watching one episode, you just can’t help but hop on the next one xD
I actually had the opposite experience with Daiya no A as I’d watched Big WIndup! prior and not the other way around. Curious to hear how you would compare the two shows once you’re done with the series, from a fellow baseball anime fan and all.

    • OH that actually sounds like a fun type of post! πŸ˜€ and lolol that feeling of clicking the next button, i esp had that in s2 like GIMME MORE (but there’s no more #cries)

I was recommended Daiya bc I’d watched KnB so the person thought I’d enjoy it more and I think they were right. I feel like if I’d watched big windup I wouldn’t have continued it or even the sports anime genre
