Spring 2016 First Impressions [Part 3]

And finally I’m down to the last part of this spring first impressions!

For some reason I felt a lot of these had…certain undertones and I’m not sure if that’s because of the genre or what (yes I’m talking about the first two). Considering my tastes run more along the BL side, I did prefer one over the other. Of course, I did take species into consideration so…yeah. There’s other stuff I noticed but I mentioned it in my impression, haha

Kumamiko: Girl Meets Bear

I saw this show on Funimation and thought the art looked really nice, so I thought I’d try it out. Part of me figured I might not like it enough to continue it because it just had that style that I don’t usually check out. What is that style? I’m not sure but I’ve seen it a lot in slice of life shows and shows with a lot of girls in it, haha!

Originally, I only planned to watch one episode but I was curious enough and ended up watching almost 3! Kumamiko is a story about a country girl who is tired of living in the mountains and she’s decided to change her life by going to high school in the city! Except there’s one problem…she has to get permission from Natsu, the talking bear she lives with. After much tantrum throwing and persistence, Natsu relents on the condition that Machi undergoes intense studying so that she can function in this new world.

I really like the art for this series and it’s funny enough that I watched more than an episode, however, there’s something about Machi that really annoys me, like her tantrums and how she hits people just because she didn’t get her way. I suppose it has something to do with her age and for that I just couldn’t get fully behind this show. I might watch it when I’m bored.

One thing that I really liked about this show was the ending song. So cute, and it’s more like talking than a song but I liked it.

Random note: I tried not to think about this but a bear and a little girl…some of these scene are very…innuendo-like.

Shounen Maid

Not many slice of life anime make it onto my to-watch list, but this one has made it! Why? Because the cast is mostly male, lol

Chihiro’s mother just passed away and left him with a very vague note explaining what he should do next. Not understanding a word, Chihiro decides to just continue on his daily life. Then, while walking home one day, he runs into some weird guy who immediately asks for his help because he’s being ‘attacked’ by a puppy. Helping the man out, Chihiro is surprised to find the man knows his name! Turns out he’s his uncle from a family Chihiro never knew he had.

So far everything’s been fun and I’m really enjoying it! Chihiro is pretty much the kid every parent would want: he can cook, clean, has good friends, and is (for the most part) friendly and respectful. He cares about the people around him, even when it’s a weirdo who put him in a maid outfit. I do think the whole cleaning business was taken a little too far but considering this is nonsense I guess it’s fine.

I probably won’t be following it but I do want to finish it

I hadn’t heard much about this show and what I’d heard hadn’t been too great. When I looked at the cover, it didn’t look too bad so I thought I’d check it out.

Endride isn’t bad but it’s not good either. It’s about Emilio, prince of Endra, who is looking to overthrow the current King. Having made it to the King’s chambers without problems, Emilio ends up in a duel that leaves him in the dungeons. While there, a stranger appears out of a bright light. That stranger is Shun. Shun is your average teenager with a fierce passion for gems and all he’d wanted was to pick up his dad from work.

Unfortunately, the strange gem in his father’s office had other plans as it sucked him into another world.

There’s nothing amazing about this show (first episodes are suppose to hook you!) and I was either confused or embarrassed while watching. Confused because, is Emilio the King’s son? or “son”? If he had this rancor against the king, why did the king allow him to still live in the castle? Also, why is Shun acting like the boss here? He knows nothing about this place so where would he be leading the two of them? And why (oh god) did he shout excalibur?! What are these swords coming out of people’s chests? Why did Shun’s dad have something like that in his office?

I imagine we’d get more answers in the second episode but I just didn’t find anything here that makes me want to take the next step. I almost didn’t finish this episode…

Big Order

Ten years ago the world suffered a great catastrophe called The Great Destruction. It was caused by an Order, a person with the ability to make their wishes come true, however, their identity remains unknown. Or it was until a Kurenai Rin entered Hoshimiya Eiji’s world and revealed that wasn’t the case.

I really enjoyed the first episode! I was really confused in the first few minutes because it was just repetition but once things got moving, everything became really interesting. Eiji’s just been told his wish hadn’t been the destruction of the world, but when the event occurred he was too young, and as a teenager he can’t recall what his wish had been. He hasn’t used his abilities since then for fear of a repeat, however, when Kurenai Rin comes to assassinate him and uses his sister as a hostage, he’s forced to take action.

It had a very Future Diary feel and I don’t just mean Kurenai’s character design and crazy personality. I would have definitely continued this except that the last episode ends on a very ecchi note. Not to mention the beginning of the second episode…I was gone.

But yes, if you’re into all that, definately check it out!

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri

If you haven’t watched this yet why are you still here!? Go now and find this and watch it and then suffer like I am! Orz

I don’t even know where to start…somewhere in the world, Kabane exist. Kabane are savage monsters that crave human flesh and turn other humans when bitten. The only way to kill them is to destroy their hearts, which are protected by an iron layer. Because of this, humanity has enclosed itself in stations where only those who pass inspections are allowed to enter.

Sound familiar? Well it should! The first time I heard about this show it was by the title Attack on Trains. I had no idea what this meant until I watched this, thank you Mika for recommending this title. So far I’m loving this! It’s definitely action packed, full of strong emotions (fear, loathing, cynicism, the will to live), and killer zombies. Killer because these guys don’t just stand around and wait for someone to make some noise. They sniff you out, jump at trains, and are smart enough to poke their hands through openings and destroy important train parts.

The art does look a little funny at times, when it closes in on some of our female characters. One second it looks like I’m watching an anime and the next I’m looking at an ecchi illustration in a completely different style. It honestly bothers me (a lot), but there’s just so many impressive things that I’m forced to just bear this. There’s also the whole traditional clothing and samurai that clashes with the ‘modern’ look from 90% of the cast. Part of me is like what and the other part is like there needs to be a way to tell them apart.

Mumei is a beast. I do have some issues with her beating up on our main character (coughlevicough) but other than that she’s pretty cool. And Ikoma is like Eren with a brain (sorry Eren I still love you lol). Ah! That cliffhanger, why must I suffer like this >_<

And since I’m already on the AoT comparison, the soundtrack is lacking here. It makes me so sad~ I think this is going to be my favorite of the season 😀

And that is all for this season’s first impressions! I mean, there is still the My Hero Academia post but other than that I feel like this time I got a taste for quite a few shows. Out of all of these the only ones I will be continuing are: Bungo Stray Dogs, Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto, Shounen Maid, My Hero Academia, and Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. I might come back to some others but chances are very unlikely, especially if they’re incomplete.

If I find something else (highly unlikely), I’ll definitely tell you guys. Until next time~
