Spring 2016 First Impression [Part 1]

Hey guys! So it’s been quite a while since I last posted any first impressions or reviews and I’d like to remedy that through a spring 2016 first impression!

I know I tried to do this last season but I only really ended up watching two shows: Erased and Dimension W. I will (hopefully) be writing a post up for each in the future so wait for those! In the meantime, it’s about time I got started on the Spring Season 🙂

Super Lovers

Before I start on the impression Ren is voiced by the same actress who did Ritsuka from Loveless!! I’m fangirling right now ヾ(≧∇≦*)ゝ As I was listening to him I couldn’t help but feel that the voice was familiar so I went to MAL and bam! It’s Ritsuka~

Now then, I really enjoyed this first episode of Super Lovers! We get to meet Haru who went down to Canada to visit his birth mother for the summer after he got a call saying she was on the verge of death. Of course, when he arrives he finds her perfectly healthy but there’s one more addition to the household. It seems his mother has taken in a boy named Ren who is more dog than human, and it’s up to Haru to civilize him!

After many scratches and bites, Ren starts to take a liking to Haru and begins to eat food at the table, wear shoes, and take a bath.

While there were no particularly amazing scenes in Super Lovers I really liked the animation and stills compared to our older boy’s love shows. In the genre I would place it up there with Loveless, possibly better because it’s so pleasing to the eye (all the colors and sparkles). We also get a sense of the characters. Haru is a worrywart who greatly cares for his younger brothers and is loved by them, but he also has a complex about his eyes being ‘weird.’ We get a sense that his younger self was similar to Ren, in that he had trouble with kids his own age and that he preferred to hang out with the family dogs.

Ren also has some character development as we see him become civilized, however, there’s not much information about his past. We know he’s lost his memories, however, signs of abuse were found on his body and when he slept one night we get a glimpse of a nightmare.

The pacing was really good, nothing felt rushed. When Haru finally returns to Tokyo he meets up with his parents (the ones he lives with) and the preview we get really makes me want more. So far the anime is being faithful to the manga so I’m excited to see more!

The only thing that I didn’t like about this was the constant closeups to Haru’s eyes. Like, I get it, twice was enough, why are you doing this a dozen times?! Haha

Bungo Stray Dogs

Well now, if you guys follow me on Twitter, you all know where I stand on this show! Yes, that ending…I was so shipping those two, kekeke (and yes, I did already go check out the fanfiction and found this really adorable one!). Any who, I really enjoyed how fun this show was and how crazy some of the characters were, will definitely be continuing!

We get to meet the homeless Atsushi who hasn’t eaten in four days and has finally worked up the courage to commit theft to stay alive. He promises he’ll steal from the next person he sees but the first one zips by in a motorcycle and the one after is a group of military police. He passes on them and on his third try he finds someone floating down the river. After some debate Atsushi dives into the river and saves this mysterious person. However, when they wake, instead of being grateful, the person is upset because Atsushi ruined their suicide attempt!

This is when we learn this character is Dazai Osamu, who is part of the Armed Detective Company. I found Dazai to be a really funny and strange character, what with his love of suicide and teasing his partner. I also felt that a lot of the characters in this show reminded me of other characters. For example, there’s this short blonde kid with a straw hat who instantly reminded me of Finnian from Black Butler. Dazai’s partner also reminded me of Shizuo from Drrr! and there was this slit eyed detective who not only looked like Izaya but also had his voice (Hiroshi Kamiya~~)!

The art was definitely my type and the music was great! As a first episode it did an awesome job of catching a viewers attention. I’d say more but then I’d be treading on spoiler content.

My only complaint was that Atsushi seemed a wee bit too cowardly, though I’m sure that’ll change as he gets some experience and stuff.

[I’ve watched this episode 3 times already! I want more~]

Joker Game

As I was making my list for Spring season, I didn’t notice this title until Magnitude Reviews mentioned it to me on Twitter. Since I was already watching first episodes I thought I’d give it a try.

Honestly, I wasn’t really impressed, possibly because the genre doesn’t appeal to me. So much that I can’t even summarize what’s going on. I mean, I get that there’s the main character who believes that spies are cowardly and his views are very friendship and patriotic based compared to everyone else’s. One day he stumbles upon the eight of his coworkers (?) playing a game of poker and he joins, only to then be told they were playing Joker Game. Joker Game is where they appear to be playing poker but in reality they’re all dropping hints of each other’s cards and trying to gain people to their side in order to win the game.

This concept is then played in a real case where the main character goes after an American guy (I think he’s American) who has come to Japan and is believed to be a spy. The nine of them all dress as the police and raid this man’s home. The terms of the raid though, are a bit risque. If nothing is found the Lieutenant (MC) is to commit hara-kiri.

As the raid continues nothing is found and the MC realizes that the eight he’d come with knew this all along.

On Crunchyroll this episode is Part 1, and it really does feel incomplete. There’s nothing that really impressed me and chances are I won’t be continuing. All this politics and government stuff bores me, however, if you’re into all of this, chances are you’ll enjoy this show. I mean, who knows, maybe if there’d been some fantasy element to this I might have enjoyed it, haha

There was also something about the main character that rubbed me the wrong way and I instantly categorized him as annoying. Not to mention that the eight spies all look the same to me…with a few hairstyle changes. So confusing

The Lost Village/Mayoiga

I have no idea why I decided to check this show out but I thought, why not? It was not what I expecting and I haven’t decided if that’s a good thing or not…

We have a tour bus full of 30 individuals ranging from adults to teenagers (?) who are, for the most part, facing some kind of hardship and are planning to go to Nanakimura to start their lives from scratch. It’s said that Nanakimura can’t be found on maps and nobody but a few have ever encountered it. Those that reside in Nanakimura, however, live freely and happily, a sort of utopia.

To start off, we have so many characters that I couldn’t remember anyone’s name, however, four individuals did stick out. One of them is the main character Mitsumune, two girls (one is called Lion), and a Sasuke/Levi looking dude who sits next to Mitsumune on the bus. I think his name is Hayato…

Since the beginning I had a feeling that something was wrong. The whole thing was too sketchy, too cheerful, and who goes on a tour called First Life Do-Over Tour? They read suicide letters, sing a sad Hippo song, and think up torture methods. Then cannibalism is mentioned and my eyes shone.

Basically I’m watching this for the future deaths and cannibalism things that will happen. I mean 30 people and only 4 memorable characters, killing some off sounds like a good plan. Not to mention that this is listed with shows like Another and Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories.

My only complaint is that the characters all look like they’re 10

[Episode 2 is out on Crunchyroll for members]

I’ve decided to split these into at least 2 parts. This one has shows I checked out on Crunchyroll, the next will have shows from Funimation, and there might be a part 3 where I list the shows I checked out but couldn’t finish for some reason. The third one is a might.

Since I’m in an anime watching mood, anyone have any recommendations? I was already told to watch the Hero Academia one

Until Soon~

  2. I started watched super lovers and it’s really good so far! I also watched the first episode of the lost village, and I don’t think I’ll finish it by the end of the season; I’ll probably drop it somewhere between episode 2-4. I thought the lost village had potential but wasn’t executed very well.
