Hey guys! So it’s been a while since I last wrote up a review of stuff…being busy and all has made that slightly hard. In the meantime, though, I throw this Manga Tag at you! I first saw it on Daiyamanga’s Blog and she left the challenge open to whoever wanted to participate. I thought, why not? I like showing off my books, haha
And even though it took me a while to get around to this, here is the Manga Tag post! Before I get down to the questions, I think I’m supposed to tell you all how many manga books I own…and after counting everything I came up with…884 translated manga books! I am nowhere near Daiya’s 2,600+ books but you know, I’m getting there 😀
As for other types of books I have:
- 24 Light novels
- 47 Japanese manga
- 3 American comics/BL
- 6 Japanese Light Novels
- 23 Doujin
- 5 Japanese magazines
- 12 OtakuUSA magazines
I know this challenge doesn’t include all this but I just wanted to throw that out. I also know I’m off by a few books because I’m still waiting for a couple orders to come in but that’s only about 5 books at most.
And as a final note, this post will be split into 2 parts. Why? Well, I really want to get this out and the first few questions are ready to go, the other half…well, those are still being worked. But yes! Let’s start the questions now 😀
What was your first manga?
My first manga was Inuyasha, which I got with a DVD (it was a bundle) in my elementary years, possibly during my first year of being an otaku. I didn’t really think much about manga then, hardly read it (I didn’t read in general in that time), haha. After that, my second was probably Skip Beat, which I got at my eighth grade book fair!
As you can see, both volumes are really getting yellow! (By the way, I just noticed this but the Inuyasha book is printed from left to right! More pictures of this in another question)
What is your most expensive manga?
I’m not sure what this means. The most expensive manga has always been paying retail value so somewhere around $20 for an omnibus. But I guess I did just recently pay $15 for Rabbit Man, Tiger Man, which is priced at $12.95…not that much more expensive really.
This is actually the first time I’ve seen Rabbit Man, Tiger Man in print. For some reason I thought it hadn’t been licensed…but since it is, it is now on my Must-One-Day-Buy List! I only have the second volume because the person selling it wasn’t selling her first volume, bummer 😛
What was your least expensive manga?
I actually have a lot of cheap manga ranging from $1.60 to $5. I think right now my cheapest IS $1.60, which are my Okane ga Nai books ($10 for 6 volumes). If we’re talking translated manga though, my cheapest is probably at $1.66 – $2. On average I tend to buy a lot of $5 books.
I know Legal Drug was at a booth where they had 3 books for $5 (I hope my memory’s not failing me too much) and I know I got Voice or Noise for a good price too…ah! I just spend and don’t check! Oh, and thanks to my brother I also got Seraph of the End v. 1 – 5 and Judge v. 2 – 6 for $2 a piece! 😀
Buddha I got for half-price so $7 (The only reason I got this book was because I already owned the first book, which I got for $5 at ACEN but yeah, need to read it)
What is the most boring manga you own?
I actually can’t think of any off the top of my head, possibly because I’ve forgotten all about them (which is what happens when a book is boring). Though I have noticed that the books I find more boring are the ones with…art that isn’t to my liking.
Some examples of that are Alone in My King’s Harem and My Only King (never liked that the uke was drawn like a girl), Fallen Moon (it had so much potential, but because it was a compilation of short stories they all felt lacking), Hot Steamy Glasses, Love Training, and You Make My Head Spin!.
I’m sure there are more laying around my shelves, haha
What is your favorite manga series?
I actually answered this in the manga challenge that I am slowly going through and that is Skip Beat! It’s the manga that kind of started my journey into manga (even though I’d collected one other series before this) and I’ve been collecting it for quite a few years now.
Right now I have 34 volumes and I think volume 35 just came out in September so I’m only a tiny bit behind, haha 😀
Kyoko is just so lovable, her perseverance, her independent spirit, but also the darkness that cradles her heart at times. She’s very human to me and I just love to read through all the struggles and successes that she goes through as she learns to love and become a woman.
What is the most relate-able manga series you own?
So this question is actually pretty hard…I own a lot of fantasy and supernatural type manga and even the manga with non-magical settings are much too over the top for me. Ahhh, and now I need to go through my shelves to see what manga could possibly be relate-able…
So I ended up choosing 2 series that I’m going to loosely relate to, haha! The first is After School Nightmare, which is basically a psychological manga that deals with identity and different forms of violence. I find this relate-able because it touches on topics many people (including myself) live through on a daily basis but that isn’t really talked about. In my case, it’s things like identity, how people perceive me, and fear of men.
The other series is Itsuwaribito and I relate to the lying in this series. I know the main character lies for the greater good and I don’t but yeah, that’s where it is. I also take my lying to an extreme sometimes (but not to where I’m hurting someone) and it makes people laugh so that’s a plus 😀
What is one manga you own that is based off an anime?
I just have to say that some of these questions require quite a bit of research and this was one of them! At first, I was trying to guess what titles would fall into this category and then I’d check google. This method was actually not fun at all. Then I randomly happened upon Baka Updates and I found the way!
I think it happened when I was searching Samurai Champloo but on Baka Updates they have a tag based on an anime, and I just clicked and scrolled through the titles, checking if I owned any, haha! And I know the question only asked for one series but since I didn’t have many to begin with I figured I’d just show them all!
The titles are Romeo and Juliet, Darker than Black, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Code Geass: Knight! I highly recommend checking out all the listed series, they’re great (though I do have to check out Code Geass myself so yeah, haha).
Mostly just short stuff 🙂
What is your rarest manga?
Before I answer this question I would like to say thank you to Daiyamanga for helping me, otherwise I don’t even know how I’d have gone about answering this question! Thank you 🙂
As for my answer, my rarest titles all seem to cluster around my yaoi manga. What I did was go to Amazon and type in some titles to see how much they cost right now. Those that were selling for high prices were my ‘rarest’ manga. Some of these prices really surprised me considering I bought these books for ~$12 or less.
Here are the titles starting from the most expensive: Private Teacher v1 ($106.77), Cold Light LN ($71.24), Stay Close to Me ($60.48), Only Serious About You v2 ($59.88), Private Teacher v2 ($59.72), Air Gear Omnibus v 15-17 ($50), Only Serious About You v1 ($44.97), Cool/Uncool ($44.94), and Private Teacher v3 ($26.44).
The only one I’m iffy about it Only Serious About You volume 2 since I found a listing priced at +$50 and one priced at $12.95 with only 6 books left in stock. Not sure if that still counts if right now you can still buy it at retail price. **I checked these prices a few weeks back, not sure if stuff changes and how often it does**
This completes the first part of the Manga Tag, hopefully, I answered the questions as accurately as I could. I know I was having trouble with the ‘rarest manga’ and a few others that will appear in part 2.
And similarly to how Daiya did her challenge, I’ll leave this open to anyone who wants to tag themselves. I mean, I’d tag others but I don’t really know if they collect manga or if they’d even have the time and motivation to do this
If you end up doing the challenge, feel free to drop some links so I can check out your answers
Until next time~ 🙂
